3. Community & Social Presence

Community & Social Presence

What to Evaluate

Community strength isn’t just about numbers, it’s about engagement, growth quality, and platform fit. A project with an active, loyal, and decentralized community is more likely to survive market shifts and reach product-market fit. Beware of inflated metrics (bought followers, fake Discords) and focus on real signals.

🧠 Key Things to Look For:

1. Platform Alignment

  • Is the project focused where its actual users hang out?

    • DeFi → Twitter, Discord

    • Gaming → Telegram, YouTube, TikTok

    • Infrastructure → Developer forums, GitHub, Farcaster

  • Are they using the right tools for their vertical?

    • Governance tools (Snapshot, Tally)

    • Proposal forums (Commonwealth, Discourse)

Scoring:

  • ✅ Score higher if the project builds community where its target audience is

  • ❌ Score lower if it relies on vanity numbers with no meaningful interaction

2. Engagement vs Follower Count

  • Look for real engagement:

    • Replies, retweets, quote tweets from real users

    • Active polls, AMAs, feedback loops

    • Reposts from builders/influencers not paid to promote

Red flag: 150k Twitter followers, but posts get 5 likes. That’s inorganic.

Scoring:

  • ✅ High quality, consistent engagement = strong community

  • ❌ High follower count + dead engagement = inorganic growth

🛠️ Tools:

3. Community Ownership & Advocacy

  • Do members defend the project or educate others?

  • Is there user-created content (memes, threads, tutorials)?

  • Any loyal power-users or repeat advocates?

Great projects often have “community missionaries,” not just mercenaries.

Scoring:

  • ✅ Score higher if community appears organic, helpful, and self-sustaining

  • ❌ Score lower if community is passive, shill-driven, or reward-farmed

4. Transparency & Openness

  • Can anyone join and participate?

  • Are there townhalls, open roadmap sessions, AMAs?

Beware of closed ecosystems with “gatekept” info or mod-only chats — it signals centralization.

Scoring:

  • ✅ Public, interactive spaces = good

  • ❌ Censorship, silence, or hyper-controlled environments = weak signal

How to Investigate

  • Join their Discord/Telegram

    • Is there real convo happening?

    • Are mods present and helpful?

  • Check Twitter:

    • Who’s engaging with the posts?

    • Are KOLs interacting organically?

Summary of Scoring

Score higher if:

  • Active, visible, organic community

  • Engagement comes from users (not just team shills)

  • Platforms match user type (DeFi on Twitter, GameFi on TikTok/YouTube)

Score lower if:

  • High numbers, low interaction

  • Fake giveaways, bots, or paid promo loops

  • Centralized control with no interaction from leadership
