# 5. Competitive Landscape

## Competitive Landscape

### What to Evaluate

A project's value isn’t just based on what it does but how it compares to others doing the same thing.\
You want to assess how **differentiated** it is, what its **moat** is, and whether it’s just another clone.

***

#### 🔁 Fork or Original?

* Is the protocol original or just a fork?
* Does it bring new mechanics or just a UI rebrand?
* Check GitHub, is it a real build or a tweaked copy?

**Scoring:**

* ✅ Built from scratch or meaningfully improves on existing models = higher
* ❌ Simple fork with no new features or strategy = lower

🛠️ Tools:

* [DeFiLlama](https://defillama.com)
* [Token Terminal](https://tokenterminal.com)

***

#### 🌍 Market Positioning

* Is the project entering a **crowded vertical** (e.g. another AMM, another L2)?
* Does it have a unique take or niche audience?

> Example: A DeFi protocol tailored for gaming guilds is more unique than a generic DEX clone.

**Scoring:**

* ✅ Unique positioning or underexplored vertical = better
* ❌ No clear differentiation = weak narrative fit

***

#### 🧱 Moat and Barriers to Entry

* What protects the project from being easily copied?
  * Network effects?
  * Strong integrations?
  * Real community lock-in?
  * Unique data or tech?

> If another team could clone it in 2 days, there’s no moat.

**Scoring:**

* ✅ Moat exists through ecosystem depth, partnerships, IP, or real usage = strong
* ❌ Zero defensibility = weak

***

#### 🏗️ Interoperability and Ecosystem Fit

* Is the project isolated or plugged into multiple ecosystems?
* Are there bridges, cross-chain deployments, or integrations?

**Scoring:**

* ✅ Works across chains, has multiple partnerships = higher
* ❌ Single chain + no collabs = lower

***

### Summary of Scoring

**Score higher if:**

* Project is original, or at least a major improvement on the norm
* Well positioned in an underserved niche
* Moat is strong and growing
* Ecosystem integrations show longevity

**Score lower if:**

* Another fork with no innovation
* Competing in a saturated vertical
* Easily replicable
* No traction or interest from other projects
